How to train your lawn to use less water

08/06/2009

How to train your lawn to use less water During the dryer summer months, it’s important to adjust your lawn maintenance habits.

According to Rolawn, Europe’s largest turf grower, the good news is that you can train lawns to use less water. By reducing the amount of fertilizer recommended, there will be less growth and less demand for water.

When mowing, it is recommended a maximum of one third of the leaf blade is removed at a time and the height is allowed to increase slightly. It is also very important to keep mower blades sharp, damaged grass blade edges turn brown quickly and make your lawn appear to need water. Most importantly, only cut when necessary, your lawn will slow or even stop growing in times of drought.

Research by Rolawn has highlighted that it is particularly important not to apply more water than the soil can hold in the root zone. A quick and easy way to test the moisture level is to push a long screwdriver into the ground – if you can do this easily to the depth of the roots then it has adequate moisture.

Rolawn e-mails out lawn care tips regularly, anybody can register on-line for these at http://www.rolawndirect.co.uk/register_now.html. The tips are specially produced for Rolawn by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI), Europe’s leading independent research organisation in the sports and amenity turf industry.
