Britain's lawns helping to reduce pollution

12/06/2008

Britain's lawns helping to reduce pollution The satisfaction of creating a beautiful lawned garden can be rewarding for you and the environment.

  • Lawn turf grass traps and removes dust and dirt from the air.

  • 250 sq.metres of lawn absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and releases enough oxygen for a family of four to breathe.

  • Lawn turf acts as a natural filter, reducing pollution by purifying the water passing through its root zone.

  • Unlike paved areas, lawn turf absorbs rain and passes the surplus on to the underground water table.

  • The soft resilient surface of lawn turf is the safest and least expensive place to play. Compare the temperature on a hot day between a lawn and a paved or tarmac area; lawns will be 30 degrees cooler than tarmac and 14 degrees cooler than bare soil.

Cedric McMillan, Sales & Marketing Director of Rolawn, Britain’s largest grower of cultivated turf commented “Many people are unaware that laying a lawn brings positive benefits to our environment. At Rolawn, we want to make people aware that as a lawn grows, it cools and cleans the atmosphere by reflecting the sun’s heat, silently and efficiently contributing to a healthier environment”.
